ARCHITECTURAL OLD TIMERS SAMPLE BOOKLET
OBJECTIVE
Choose a paper company, in this project’s case it is Mohawk, and create a paper sample booklet that includes three different types of folds. Architectural Old Timers was inspired by a fascination and love for older structures that are living long lives and have been through many different generations.
CONCEPT
There are thousands of books in the world that cover all different kinds of architecture. This concept deals with the most visited structures in the world ie. The Leaning Tower of Pisa, The Eiffel Tower, The Colosseum, etc. In Architectural Old Timers, these buildings are personified as being elderly people since they have been around for so many years. Readers get a unique perspective about what they think of the world as well as objects that represent something and elderly person might use in their daily lives ie. a walking cane, hip joint, botox, etc.
DESIGN & DELIVERABLES
This sample booklet features pull quotes and many overlaying collage techniques to give a modern design to such old pieces. The different types of folds were picked carefully for each architectural wonder. The novelty fold shows the Arch of Titus which is the gateway to the Colosseum which is behind the fold. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is featured within a gate fold due to its height. The booklet finishes off with an accordion fold upwards for the Eiffel Tower so viewers can watch it stretch up revealing its height too.
The Beginning
The intro touches a little bit about what the book is going to be about and it shows some of the collage and overlay design that will be present in the rest of the book. It also gives an example of the elderly symbolism, in this case its Ghandi's glasses for the Taj Mahal.
The Parthenon
The Parthenon is the oldest structure in this book and it has been through the most damage. It has been through many hard times including a war, which is why there are bandages all over it and a wheelchair hidden underneath it.
The Colosseum
The Arch of Titus is considered to be the gateway to the Colosseum which makes it a perfect beginning page. Once you turn the page the Colosseum opens up in a novelty fold that spreads larger than the page itself to account for its size. The older generation cap is the symbol for the Colosseum for its confidence.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
It is no mystery that the Leaning Tower of Pisa has been more upright. This is what happens when we age, our backs aren't what they used to be and we often need a cane to support it. On the front page you can read about the Leaning Tower and once you open the gate fold up you can see what kind of back stress it is really under and this is why the quadrants are mismatched.
La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia may have started being built in 1892, but it is still an ongoing project that constantly needs work. This is why there is a need with botox on the page. Sagrada is an old structure that is always being made to look newer again due to all of its construction.
The Eiffel Tower
When you flip to the last page of this booklet you will find a top heavy Eiffel Tower page with just the legs sticking out on the bottom. Here an accordion fold allows you to pull the page up and view the tower in its glorious height. Since it is such a massive piece of architecture the Eiffel Tower needs to have a strong foundation which is why there are four hip joints that help to keep it strong.
